An art form not local to India, dates back to the time of Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the modern capital city of Jaipur (Rajasthan). It is made of crushed quartz, green glass, fuller’s earth and borax; and fired at high temperatures. The pottery is then painted with metallic oxides in various shades of blue, and more recently in colours such as pink, yellow and green. It contains no clay.

This craft is native to the district of Channapatna (Karnataka) where many families in the town and nearby villages have found a steady export market for their craft. Napkin and curtain rings, frames, candle stands and attractive toys are some of their popular products.
